PARKS IN THE CITY

Amidst the hustle and bustle of metropolitan Kuala Lumpur there are numerous pockets of green tranquility that sooths the senses and revitalize the spirits. The parks, gardens and forests of KL offer a green haven with flora and fauna that will both relax and amaze visitors.

WALK IT, TRAM IT 

The Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park (Nature Zone) and Dataran Merdeka (Heritage Zone) are two must-visit zones when in Kuala Lumpur that are filled with many of the city’s “must-see” attractions. Explore this area on foot and you will come across museums, memorials and monuments, parks and gardens, iconic heritage buildings and places of worship. And if you get tired of walking, then just purchase a single tram ride ticket that lets you hop on and hop off at any of the attractions within these two zone. Tickets are sold on board the trams so you can conveniently hop on at any of the stops along the way.

Even in the heart of Kuala Lumpur there are wide expanses of greenery that offer a calm respite from the hustle and bustle of the city. Take some time out at any one of the lush green parks and gardens to relax and unwind. Whether you are a horticultural enthusiast or not, the gardens provide an excellent introduction to tropical plants and trees, and there are a variety of activities for the whole family to join in.

Wherever you are in the city, you are never too far away from a green escape. With interesting sculptures, water features, jogging and walking paths, large children’s playgrounds, there is always something to do! Some parks also have a number of vantage photo spots where the best pictures of the Petronas Twin Towers can be captured.

Tun Abdul Razak Heritage Park is a great to place for nature lovers to spend a day outdoors in close proximity to the skyscrapers. This 173-acre park comprises of the Perdana Botanical Garden, a butterfly and bird park, works of art and museums, and plenty of plant species. Ventures into this park and you come away richer with knowledge of the culture and heritage of the country. A great way to see all of these sights is by boarding the tram that runs through the heritage park.

PERDANA BOTANICAL GARDEN

The Perdana Botanical Garden (formerly known as Lake Gardens) has recently undergone a major facelift by City Hall to achieve Botanical status. There are over 350 species of trees and plants that include the indigenous as well as the imported, such as the Cannonball tree, the Bottle tree, Sausage Tree and the Baobab tree. The park also offers a variety of facilities that include the Panggung Anniversary outdoor theatre, children’s playground and a jogging track.

KIA KLEMENZ

Any visit to the Perdana Botanical Gardens is not complete without stopping by the Kia Klemenz Gift & Souvenir Shop located just behind the “Panggung Aniversari” complex. Offering an eclectic mix of handcrafted souvenirs, Malaysian made apparels and home décor items this quaint little shop has a number of surprises in store. Although the items are all of export quality, some are handmade by disadvantaged groups such as single mothers and a portion of the sale price goes towards their cause. 

The boutique is fully air-conditioned and the adjoining Café offers freshly brewed coffees, teas and a variety of cold and hot snacks.

KL BIRD PARK

Known as the “world’s largest free-flight walk-in aviary”, KL Bird Park is the home to 3,000 birds of approximately 200 species. Get up close and personal with birds that stroll past you on the many trails of the park. Don’t forget to catch the bird show at the amphitheatre at 12.30pm and 3.30pm daily.

KL BUTTERFLY PARK

With more than 5,000 butterflies from over 120 exotic species, the KL Butterfly Park is designed to emulate the butterfly’s natural habitat that comprises of various species of tropical plants. Other attractions include Japanese koi fish, fresh water turtles, live insects and a museum with a large collection of butterflies and insects from around the world.

KL ORCHID GARDEN

The Kuala Lumpur Orchid Garden, which is adjacent to the Hibiscus Garden, houses up to 800 species of orchids. The garden comprises a semi circle pergola for the climbing and epiphytic variety and a rock garden for the terrestrial variety.

Established in April 1986, the garden was set up primarily as a showcase for the varieties of orchids as well as a centre for growing, conserving and studying these wonderful flowering plants. The garden sits on 1 hectare of land that is situated at the highest point of the The Perdana Botanical Garden.

KL HIBISCUS GARDEN

There are more than 200 types of colourful hybrid hibiscus that have been planted near the pathway, terrace, beside the small ponds and near the manmade fountain to beautify this garden. Benches and sitting areas are available around the pergola for the visitors to rest and relax while appreciating the beauty of the hibiscus, Malaysia’s national flower.

KLCC PARK

For those who wish for a respite in the heart of the city, this park is the perfect place to be. KLCC Park is a well-landscaped park of tropical fauna and dancing fountains. Designed by famous Brazilian architect Roberto Burle Marx, the park offers recreational activities such as children’s playgrounds and wading pools, as well as a jogging track. Because of its location, the park offers views of Kuala Lumpur’s skyscrapers from lush green surroundings.

TITIWANGSA LAKE GARDENS

Yet another beautiful park located along the fringe of the city is the Tititwangsa Lake Gardens. Several large varieties of fish are bred in the lakes. There are facilities for jogging, canoeing, aqua biking and even a lakeside restaurant.

KEPONG METROPOLITAN PARK

Located at the Northern end of Jinjiang, is famous among locals for the kite flying activities that are practiced at this public facility on a daily basis. The ideal place for kite enthusiasts, there is a huge field that runs parallel to the main road in the park that is specifically for this purpose. Most barriers and trees have been removed to ensure a clearance of at least 100m for the kites to take off.

KL FOREST ECO PARK

KL is the only city in the world that has a natural rainforest situated right in its centre. The KL Forest Eco Park (formerly known as the Bukit Nanas Forest Reserve) was gazette as a forest reserve in 1906 and is one of the oldest in Malaysia. It is situated near the forest is one of the city’s icons, the Kuala Lumpur Tower.

FOREST RESEARCH INSTITUTE OF MALAYSIA (FRIM)

The Forest Research Institute of Malaysia (FRIM) is located in Kepong, Kuala Lumpur. Established 75 years ago, it is undoubtedly one of the leading institutions in tropical forestry research in the world. FRIM offers a back-to-nature experience whilst enjoying the flora, fauna, landscapes and the remains of an old Orang Asli settlement. A waterfall and river cutting through this forest reserve adds serenity to this luxuriant landscape. FRIM is a truly educational place for children as well as a great outing place for the entire family.

For the more adventurous ones, check out the four jungle tracks: Keruing Trail, Rover Track, Engkabang Trail and Salleh Trail, all of which will take visitors through some of the spectacular secondary forests in Malaysia.

For those seeking additional adventure, there is the Canopy Walk, which is located 30m above the ground. This 200m walkway is built on tree tops and is the third of its kind in Malaysia. Those interested in experiencing the canopy walk should preferably make prior arrangement because the number of people allowed on the canopy walk per day is limited to 250 people.
