COOKING CLASS

Cooking enthusiasts can get the opportunity to try their hand at making some authentic Malaysian dishes by joining the cooking classes available. Here are a few establishments offering half-day cooking classes that are ideal for tourists.

LAZAT MALAYSIAN COOKING SCHOOL

The Lazat Malaysian Cooking school is run in a residential house located on the fringe of the city. One of the charms of this culinary school is their unique location that overlooks the Penchala Hills, surrounded by greenery away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Lazat’s hands-on classes are held daily from Monday to Saturday and are presented in English. Specializing in Malaysian cuisine, each day of the week a different menu of dishes are taught. Students will have the opportunity to cook a three course lunch comprising of an appetizer, main course, side dish and dessert. Classes begin at 8.30am and end in time for lunch.

BEN’S MASAK-MASAK

The Malay term “Masak-masak” means to “play-cook”, and is usually used when referring to children playing. This is an apt name for the cooking class that emphasizes on having fun with food while learning how to cook it.

The hands-on workshops are conducted within the Ben’s Independent Grocer at the ground floor of Publika mall. While all the ingredients for the class are provided, students who want to try the recipes at home can get all ingredients for the recipes at the grocer. A number of professional chefs, each specializing in different cuisine, cover a variety of Malaysian, Western and fusion recipes.

REBUNG CHEF ISMAIL

Dato Chef Ismail is one of Malaysia’s most famous celebrity chefs. Having appeared on numerous television programmes and cooking shows, he is known to promote traditional Malay cuisine. His restaurant called “Rebung”, located near the Perdana Botanical Gardens, is popular amongst locals and foreign visitors for its spread of authentic Malay cuisine.

Cooking classes are conducted at Rebung on a request basis. Those who are keen to try their hand at cooking some of the traditional Malay dishes need to make a request at least one week in advance. And if you are lucky, Chef Ismail himself may be conducting the class.

THE COOKING HOUSE

The Cooking House is a professional set-up with kitchen and event facilities that can cater to small and large groups alike. Located in the Bangsar area, they provide a wide range of classes that encompasses a great number of cuisines from different cultures. Their team of teaching staff includes Malaysian celebrity chefs such as Florence Tan (known as the Queen of Nyonya cuisine) and Johari Edrus (Masterchef Malaysia’s most senior jury member).

There are classes conducted for everyone - adults and even kids too. From short workshops that take just a few hours to full courses that take six weeks to complete, the classes cover cooking, baking and even culinary team building for corporate.

STARHILL CULINARY STUDIO

The Starhill Culinary Studio provides an inspiring culinary experience for all in a professional and sleek environment right in the heart of the city. Located on Starhill Gallery’s Muse floor, along Jalan Bukit Bintang, the culinary school offers a number of classes including Asian cooking, western cooking, baking, pastry and even wine appreciation.

The school is headed by the award winning Chef Wai, YTL group’s corporate executive chef, who also heads the YTL restaurants in Starhill. He is supported by a host of experienced and award-winning chefs who conduct the classes in a very professional yet friendly manner.
